  • How do I pay for items with my chip card?

It is really easy to use your chip card. Simply check that the retailer accepts Visa, select the goods you want to buy and take them to the checkout as usual. At the register, you will see a small device or machine with a keypad, a screen and a slot to insert your card. To pay, simply place card into the slot in the bottom of a payment terminal and leave it there for the duration of the transaction. Importantly, the card needs to remain in the reader until the transaction is complete, not swiped like a magnetic strip. Check the amount on the screen and sign the sales receipt. As is customary, one copy will be retained by the merchant and you will be given the other copy receipt as proof of purchase.
  • Why does the card have a chip?

The chip is a way to store information digitally. The chip stores your data and replaces the card’s traditional magnetic stripe making it harder for hackers to make a counterfeit copy of your credit card if they steal your account information. The chips generate a unique code for every transaction, so if fraudsters steal data from a retailer, they won’t be able to use that information to make future purchases. The chips have become the standard in most of the credit-card-accepting world.
  • If I buy something at a store that does not accept chip, can I still use my chip card?

Yes. You can use your chip card anywhere Visa is accepted. If the store does not accept chip, they will run the transaction using the magnetic stripe (swiping the card). However, while you will encounter payment terminals with support for both the magnetic strip and chip on modern credit cards, you can’t necessarily just use the magnetic strip on a chip-enabled machine. If you try to swipe a chip-enabled card on such terminals, you will probably be asked to insert the card and pay via the chip method.
  • How can you tell if the store machine is chip enabled?

A chip-enabled reader has a slot into which you insert the card, like what you might see at an ATM. If you don’t see one, then the terminal is not chip-enabled.
  • Can I still use my old ATM PIN with the new chip card?

A new PIN is generated for each chip credit card. If you had an old card the PIN for that card will no longer be valid with your new card. You will receive your PIN mailer when you uplift your new card. Please ensure that you securely store your new PIN as it may take some time to process your request should you require a new PIN.
